A Winchester City Council team has been nominated for an award.

The council's Ukraine team, part of housing and communities services, is shortlisted for the small team category at the Local Government Chronicle Awards.

This category recognises teams of 10 or less that demonstrate innovation, resilience, inclusivity and results.

Formed to assist Ukrainians seeking respite from war, the team aids their integration into the city through initiatives including language and skills workshops, help with housing, and promoting access to local services.

They have successfully supported more than 280 Ukrainian families, and launched numerous cultural events to encourage a warmer welcome for the Ukrainians within the district.

Cabinet member for community and engagement Cllr Kathleen Becker, said: "Our Ukraine team work tirelessly to make sure that Ukrainians who have been uprooted by war are able to integrate successfully in our district, and the effort they make to ensure Ukrainians feel welcome and at home is exceptional.

"They also provide support to our hosts, who are invaluable in this process.

"I’m so proud of the work the team does – their efforts are thoroughly worthy of recognition and so I’m really pleased that they have been shortlisted for this award."

The winner will be announced on June 12.
