AN INDEPENDENT girls' school in Winchester performed in the cathedral’s Evensong to celebrate the school’s 140th birthday.

Prep and senior choirs from St Swithun’s sang while headmistress Ms Jane Gandee and former head Lady Joan Appleyard led the sermon on Sunday, March 17.

Head girl Alic Elkington gave a reading, while the senior choir debuted O Be Joyful in the Lord, a hymn by composer and former member of staff, Clive Watkiss, that was commissioned for the event.

The Evensong was overseen by the school’s chaplain, Reverend Paul Wallington.

St Swithun’s School, in Alresford Road, was founded in 1884 by Anna Bramston. The all-girls school has a range of activities planned throughout the year to celebrate the milestone with a birthday lunch and party planned for May 3 before the Founders’ Day Concert in the evening.

Pupils across both the senior and prep school will come together on July 4 raise funds for the Bramston Bursary Foundation. They are also researching the history of the school and its its links to Winchester and the wider local community.

At the beginning of the year, the front of the school building was lit up to mark the start of its 140th birthday celebrations.
