THE Hampshire Chronicle has launched a new feature using our unrivalled archive of news photographs over the decades.
The invaluable photo archive, with hundreds of glass negatives, is being cared for by Hampshire Cultural Trust at Bar End.
These photos show a snippet of life in Winchester from the 1940s and 1950s.
From a Coronation event at Bishop's Waltham palace ruins, a backdrop which has remained unchanged, to a fire at Winchester College, which ripped through an 1870 building on April 1, 1947. Luckily it was confined to the masters' common room, stuideis and the prefect's common room, thanks to the headmaster raising the alarm.
We also see a visit from King of England George VI at Bushfield Camp in 1950 where he inspected the 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifles.
