FARMERS across the south of England are being supported to secure premium supply contracts by cutting carbon emissions.
An event this month in Shirrel Heath, near Shedfield, organised by agrifood business Bartholomews, will reveal the secrets behind low-carbon cereals, enabling farmers to cultivate financially and environmentally sustainable crops.
It is being run in collaboration with Marks and Spencer, BASF, and Fertiberia – an organisation committed to producing low carbon nitrate fertiliser.

Vivienne Harris, agricultural manager at Marks and Spencer, will share the retailer’s net zero commitment and its initiative to create net zero cereal contracts.
Richard Corden of BASF will discuss the latest advancements in precision agriculture and carbon management and Julio Bonet Gigante from Fertiberia will speak about green fertiliser which substantially reduces farm emissions while maintaining or enhancing crop yields.
Gary Herman, CEO of Bartholomews, said the conference would provide groundbreaking perspectives to growers wanting to farm in a more sustainable and profitable way.
Chichester-based Bartholomews has more than 140 years of experience in grain storage, agronomy, seed, fertiliser and crop protection and logistics, and is currently working with growers across the south of England to help them futureproof their farm systems.

Mr Herman said: “The agricultural sector’s ongoing transformative phase is being marked by buzzwords such as sustainability, biodiversity net gain, and regenerative farming, but such rhetoric can lead to confusion, leaving farmers uncertain about how to optimise their operations for both environmental and financial sustainability.
"This conference will bring together food industry experts and agribusiness leaders to showcase the types of innovations that will help farmers drastically cut their carbon footprints and ultimately win premium supply contracts.”
The event will be at the New Place Hotel in Shirrell Heath, Wickham, on Wednesday. Registration begins at 9:15am and presentations will be from 10am to 4pm.
