PLANS for a disabled toilet in a Romsey car park have been met with objections.

Robert Wilson applied for a modular changing place toilet in the Lortemore Place Car Park.

The proposal is for the unit to be constructed on the existing disabled car park spaces. When built, they will be moved elsewhere.

Romsey Town Council's planning committee submitted an objection at its meeting on March 7.

They said: “Design is out of keeping with the nearby conservation area.

“There will be a detrimental impact on access for nearby businesses for loading and unloading deliveries.

“There is adequate provision for a facility of this type to be located more centrally in the town centre.”

Romsey and District Society's planning committee also objected. They said: “The intended location impinges on local residents. A less challenging location for a modular lavatory would be within the curtilage of the Former Magistrates Court building.

“This proposal avoids the loss of car parking spaces and is likely to reduce public disturbance in the area which is already a concern. In registering our objection to the application we recommend this alternative be considered.”

Four public objections had been submitted by Friday, March 15.

Kevin Fry, of Church Street, said: “We are not against the idea of this facility, but there must be a better location in the town that will make it more user friendly and visible to those that need to use the POD.

“This end of Romsey town is not the most accessible for disabled and less able visitors. There is no clear pavement from the current disabled parking spaces to the current path, at a busy time in the carpark (market days, funerals at the Abbey etc.) the traffic around the it is congested, double parked and traffic going the incorrect way around the carpark is a concern especially when users come out of the facility straight into the flow of traffic during these times.”

In the application's planning statement, it said: “The proposed location of this changing places toilet is on the site of the existing disabled parking places within the car park. New disabled parking spaces will be provided adjacent to this proposed changing places toilet.

“The site is within easy walking distance of the abbey and other town centre facilities.”
