A COMMUNITY centre in Winchester is celebrating after securing its premises for another 25 years as well as receiving a new grant and a good Ofsted report.

Winchester City Council has signed a 25-year lease for the Carroll Centre, in Somers Close, Stanmore.

Barbara Guthrie, chair of trustees, said: “It feels like an acknowledgement for the future of the centre.”

The centre was also awarded a five-year grant from a charitable foundation. Ms Guthrie said: “This will stabilise the financial position of the centre. Further funds will be required to support the needs of the vulnerable individuals in the local community, but this donation goes a long way to address the shortfall faced by the centre. This grant is a major contribution to the work for the community.”

Councillor Martin Tod, leader of Winchester City council, and Cllr Charlie Wise, from the St Luke’s ward, joined Carroll Centre staff to celebrate Poppins Nursery achieving a ‘Good’ Ofsted report before Christmas. The positive report came a year on from the nursery being judged as ‘inadequate’.

Poppins Nursery still has a few spaces available for two to four-year-olds. For more information call 01962 840022 or email info@thecarrollcentre.org.
