A BAROQUE styled concert from a Winchester choir will be coming to the cathedral.

The Waynflete Singers will join instrument group Florilegium for an evening of Baroque Masterpieces at Winchester Cathedral on March 9.

The evening will feature choral works of Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum.

Bach’s Magnificat is one of his most famous pieces, with a five-part chorus, five soloists and a full baroque orchestra complete with trumpets and timpani drums.

Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum is a hymn of praise written as a thanksgiving for the victory at the battle of Dettingen, again filled with trumpets and a triumphant sound.

Florilegium has been described in The Times as ‘One of the most flamboyant of the younger generation of British Baroque ensembles’ and is well known to Winchester audiences for their stylish playing and worldwide performances.

The music collection has been enjoyed in concert halls all over the world, including Buenos Aires, Sydney and Berlin.

The choral music will be complemented by Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3, a showcase for the strings and Handel’s Organ Concerto The Cuckoo and the Nightingale, with its similarity to a bird song.

The solo part in the organ concerto will be played by George Castle, former organist of Winchester Cathedral and Andrew Lumsden, director of the Waynflete Singers, will conduct the performance.

Ticket prices range from £15 to £50 and booking is open through the Winchester Cathedral website.
