I would like to echo the words of Robin Atkins in his ‘Tribute to Chris’ (Chronicle, Letters, January 4).

Chris Pines was, indeed, an exceptional man who achieved much in his life. I had the pleasure of being a member of his Fund Raising Committee when he was Mayor (2007-8). We were a very good mix of people with varying interests and political persuasions. He was the same cheery character with everyone, everywhere. His interests were wide ranging. I believe he had quite a large collection of porcelain and he was an expert on wild flowers, especially orchids, which I think speaks volumes for him.

We are glad that his hard work, intelligence and personality were rewarded with an Honorary Fellowship from Winchester University which was awarded in 2013. He spoke in the cathedral with confidence and sincerity.

Many will remember him fondly from his teaching days, those as a city councillor and all he did in more recent years.
