The Advertiser article last week announcing new traffic cameras to survey yellow box road markings, etc, which are repeatedly ignored, seems to be a reasonable response to selfish or thoughtless drivers who ignore the rules.

However, more could and should already have been done to reduce the rule-breaking.

For instance, in Alma Road, the Romsey Fire Station has yellow box markings in front of it in order to permit the permanent access of firemen on call to the station, and permanent access to the road by emergency vehicles going out on call. And yet there is nothing to alert road users to the fact that they are blocking access to and from an emergency service establishment, except for three large red doors.

Perhaps, HAMPSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE FIRE STATION, painted onto the fascia above the doors might help, as might a roadside sign facing traffic traveling down Alma Road towards the traffic lights, saying HAMPSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE - FIRE STATION - KEEP THIS ACCESS CLEAR AT ALL TIMES.
