It is unclear how the animal ended up on the motorway, but police have identified the dog and contacted its owners.

As a result of the crash, three lanes of the M27 westbound were closed and traffic was halted temporarily, but got moving again within five minutes of the collision.

A badly-damaged car was seen to have crashed into the central reservation of the motorway.

But police confirmed there were no human injuries.
