In 1897, Bill No. 246 was put before the Indiana General Assembly, to set the irrational mathematical constant, pi, to be a rational number – it required the chance presence of a mathematics professor to prevent its passing into law.

Only in America? The UK Supreme Court ruled, as a matter of fact, that Rwanda could not be deemed to be a safe place to send refugees.

Rishi Sunak proposes to make a law that declares the fact not to be a fact.

We are seeing much of Flick Drummond in cosy photo shoots lately, but not hearing what she thinks.

I asked some weeks ago, in your columns, if she was prepared to go along with Sunak’s abandonment of climate commitments and his moves to prevent action against air pollution.

She hasn’t said anything to the contrary. Does she now sign up to changing facts by law; will she vote for it?

If Ms Drummond were to be elected as Winchester’s MP next year, would she think for herself, or would we have another Vicar of Bray, rubber stamping every bit of irresponsible and unpleasant legislation dreamt up in Downing Street? We have a right to know.
