A WINCHESTER photography group is celebrating its centenary.

On Tuesday, November 7, 16 past presidents of Winchester Photographic Society gathered at a club meeting at The Arc for a celebratory programme of nostalgia.

The current president Gordon Brown used his president’s evening to give a presentation to a packed audience.

He said: "We looked back at the history of the society from 1923 to the present day through our archives courtesy of Anne Ruffell and Barbara Lambert, old photographs and original cine film made by founder member Mr Heathcote Wride, a chemist in Jewry Street.

"The society has always been active in recording the historic events of the city, a tradition that carries on to this day as we are producing a photographic book of Winchester in 2023 as part of our centenary celebrations."

One of the earliest past presidents in attendance was Alex Fyfe who joined the society in 1982 and held office in 2000.

Anne Ruffell, who is still an active member after a record 40 years, was also president on two occasions.

Mr Brown interviewed four past presidents, Carol Watson, who was in office in 2002, Dr Zoe Hemsley (2009), Martin Farrow (2011) and Louise Brown (2014), who entertained with anecdotes from their term of office.

The 100th anniversary celebrations continue with a lecture on Saturday November 18 at Thornden Hall when Doug Allan, award winning cameraman for the Blue Planet series, gives a talk ‘An Eye Below Zero’ where he explains how artistic creativity mixes with science to produce a big television series that excites everyone who loves wildness and the animals that live there.

Winchester Photographic Society meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm at The Arc. For more details, contact membership@winphotosoc.uk.
