Winchester has been named one of the best places to live in England for 2024, according to Muddy Stilettos.

The medieval city was praised for its lively collection of independent businesses, historic locations, and essential connections to London and Southampton.

Nearby towns of Stockbridge and Alresford also made it to the list.

The women's lifestyle website creates a list of the 'best places to live' every year, and it has expanded its number of entrants from 250 to 260 on this occasion.

It draws upon its insight into the 28 most sought-after counties in England, guiding potential buyers to the local hot spots and up-and-coming areas.

Muddy Stilletos praised Winchester for its picturesque scenery and colourful streets that have attracted noteworthy celebrities such as Rick Stein and Raymond Blanc.

Winchester Bakery, Hotel du Vin and The Ivy were also listed as tempting local cafes and restaurants. 

The city was also commended for its arts venues that defined its rich culture, such as The Theatre Royal and The Arc.

Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College added to the city's spectacle, according to Muddy Stilletos, for their history and occasional role in Hollywood blockbusters.

Ranked alongside Winchester, is New Alresford which is just a short 15-minute drive from the city. 

The market town was commended for its proximity to the South Downs National Park, pretty riverside and role as the UK’s Watercress Capital.

Muddy Stilletos praised several cafes and restaurants including The Yard, The Woolpack and The Bush Inn which has attracted local celebrities such as Sarah Parrish and Jim Murray.

Listed after New Alresford was Stockbridge, 20 minutes from Winchester in the Test Valley

Lying in the heart of Test Valley, this small town caught their attention for its particular pull on local produce and impressive fishing past with the River Test.

The most desired place to live in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight was Overton, with Bishop’s Waltham following at number 2, and Alton in third.
