Winchester City Council is asking residents across the district to answer a short survey to help give insight to households’ recycling habits and what they would like to see in the future.

New government legislation and proposals to change waste processing arrangements across the county should mean residents have the opportunity to be able to recycle more in their household collections.

What the city council can collect from households has been restricted by not having the facilities in Hampshire to process a wider range of recycling, but this could be changing with Hampshire County Council’s proposals for a new materials recycling facility.

In anticipation of this, Winchester City Council would like to gain more insight into how residents recycle in their households, what prevents them from being able to recycle more and what they’d like in the future.

Cllr Kelsie Learney, cabinet member for the climate emergency, said: “We are very excited about the potential for all of us to be able to recycle more. We know that Winchester residents are already amongst some of the best recyclers in Hampshire and that they would like to be able to recycle more from their homes. It’s absolutely a service we want to be able to provide in the future, helping us become greener faster.

“While there are still some unknowns from government, especially related to funding, we want to make sure residents’ needs are considered from an early stage – so we’re asking these questions now.”
