I would like to express my support for the proposal to commemorate local football legend Terry Paine MBE on the new King George V football pavilion.

This idea, initially raised by former city councillor Janet Berry, would be a wonderful tribute to a remarkable footballer.

Terry Paine's roots run deep in our community. Born in Winchester and raised in the Highcliffe area, he honed his footballing skills on our local pitches, playing for Winchester before making his mark as an integral part of Southampton FC.

One of the most significant highlights of Terry Paine's career was his inclusion in the 1966 England World Cup squad. Being a member of the squad that brought home the World Cup is an extraordinary achievement and Terry is a role model for aspiring Winchester footballers of all ages.

Now at the age of 84, Terry Paine MBE continues to be a cherished figure in the football community.

His legacy deserves to be celebrated and remembered for generations to come. The proposal to commemorate him on the new King George V football pavilion is a fitting tribute that not only honours Terry's remarkable career but also serves as an inspiration to young football enthusiasts in our area.

I urge the city council to give serious consideration to this proposal. It is an opportunity to pay homage to a local footballing legend who has brought glory to our city, our county, and our nation.
