A WEAK penalty has been handed down to an individual who assaulted two police officers (Chronicle, August 31).

Not that many years ago, assaulting police a officer would automatically result in a prison sentence.

Being handed a fine is irrelevant. A punishment highlighting the severity of the crime is required. Further, it stands the chance of deterring other individuals.

Being weak on crime is a fundamental error.

The police and decent law abiding citizens deserve better.
