THE Winchester-based English Project is to host a lecture on Cockney English on September 15.

The English Project's goal is to bring awareness to the global story of the English language in all forms of past, present, and future.

Previously it has staged lectures regarding the English used in the counties of Hampshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire and Kent - this time around they are focusing on the county of London.

The aim of the lecture is to demonstrate how Cockney English has origins from the Kings and Queens of the Kingdom of Essex, which is a story dating back 1,600 years.

Cockney English is used primarily in East-End London. The lecture will see trustee of the English Project Professor Christopher Mulvey discuss aspects of accent, class, snobbery and rhyming slang.

Starting at 6pm, the lecture is estimated to last around two hours and finish at 8pm.

The event is being held for free and tickets can be booked via Eventbrite. If you are not able to attend the in-person lecture, it will also be held online through Zoom. More information regarding this event can be found via englishproject.org.
