I am researching the gay poet Fabian Strachan Woodley (1888-1957) who was born and grew up in Bristol but lived in Winchester from the 1920s until his death. He is buried in Magdalen Hill Cemetery.
He was a journalist, sportsman and a Catholic convert. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery during World War One.
In 1924 some of his poems appeared in Men and Boy's, the very first anthology of gay poetry published in the USA.
Fabian taught at Peter Symonds Grammar School for many years.
Does anyone have any memories, information or photos of Fabian they would be willing to share? I am preparing a talk about Fabian later this year, and an article for the Bristol Post. I have a very tenuous connection as my great grandafther was Fabian's sometime father in law's chaffeur.
