PART of Upper Brook Street is scheduled to be closed for more than a year while work is carried out to construct a new surgery.

Hampshire County Council will shut the road in Winchester, between its junction with the Friarsgate and a point approximately 35 metres north. The road will be closed from June 5 for 14 months or until the work is completed, with the estimated end date of the work being given as August 5, 2024.

Reasonable facilities will be provided to allow access to adjacent premises while the work is being carried out.

The work will see the construction of the new St Clements’ GP surgery on Upper Brook Street on the site of the old car park on the corner of Friarsgate and Upper Brook Street. The surgery will replace the St Clements’ Surgery on Tanner Street, with the work carried out by Assura.

The new development will include accommodation for staff and patients, 15 consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, admin facilities, a larger reception and waiting rooms.

As previously reported, the ground was broken on the project on March 13 with a special event with guests including MP Steve Brine, actor Tommy Jessop and representatives from the practice, Winchester City Council and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board.

Speaking at the time of the groundbreaking, practice manager Fey Johnson said: “This is a massive step forward and is great news for both the staff and patients at St Clements. Our current building is no longer fit for purpose and the new development will really allow us to continue improving care for our patients and to deliver the service we want to for people in Winchester.”
