AN ALRESFORD care home has been told to improve by the Care Quality Commission due to unsafe conditions.

Wayfarer Place, in The Dean, provides care and support to people living in extra care housing, with four residents receiving personal care from staff.

This was the first inspection the home - run by YourLife (Alresford) - has received since it officially opened in 2019.

While the home was rated 'good' in the areas of effectiveness, responsiveness and caring, concerns were raised over leadership and safety and those areas were graded as 'requires improvement'.

The overall grading given to the home, when it was visited by inspectors on January 19 and January 23, was 'requires improvement.'

The report, published on March 28, said: “Assessments were undertaken to assess any risks to people and to the care staff who supported them. For example, risks to the environment. However, not all risks had robust risk assessments in place.”

It added: “There were systems and processes in place to record, assess and analyse accidents and incidents. However, these were not always robust.

“The manager told us they investigated accidents and incidents and identified lessons learnt. However, we found lessons learnt were not always effectively shared with staff."

The report also had concerns about the leadership of the care home.

It said: “The concerns included aspects of recruitment, person-centred management plans for risks and medicines and lack of detail in some documentation."

However, staff at the home were found to be responsive to residents’ needs.

A spokesperson for YourLife Management Services said that action had already been taken to improve.

They said: “We took quick and decisive action immediately after the inspection to address those areas outlined in the report and an action plan has already been implemented and concluded.

"We are working closely with the CQC, our colleagues, homeowners and our partners, to provide assurance that these steps taken will continue to be sustained for the future.

“YourLife has a longstanding and excellent reputation as a retirement living operator, with 97 per cent of our developments achieving a ‘good’ rating with the CQC.

"We are also pleased to read the positive observations from the CQC throughout the report noting that homeowners feel safe and that people and relatives were positive about the attitudes and behaviour of staff and the culture of the service.”
