Enthusiastic volunteers turned out in force on March 25 for the annual Headbourne Worthy village spring clean.

The parish council provided bags, high-vis waistcoats and litter-pickers, and hosts Trish and David Spurling, of Silverstream, provided their cottage garden for villagers to meet and have a warming coffee and biscuit before setting off.

Parish council chairman Jane Rutter said: “We were delighted so many local volunteers turned up - we were able to allocate every road in the village to be cleared. Huge quantities of bottles were collected from the verges of Wellhouse Lane which will be recycled – please take your litter home with you if passing through our village. We can confidently say that over 90 per cent of rubbish collected from the verges around the village has been thrown out of passing cars. This is illegal as well as anti-social and can attract fines of up to £1,000.”

Kings Barton, which is in the civil parish of Headbourne Worthy, will have a similar event later in the spring, organised by the residents’ association and supported by the parish council.
