Winchester's farmers market has been crowned the best in the UK, much to the delight of stallholders and locals. 

HelloFresh, a recipe box provider, declared the Winchester market the winner after judging a selection of markets by how often they open each month, how long they stay open during the day, the number of stalls available and the online ratings.

The Hampshire Chronicle went down the busy Winchester High Street to ask locals what they love about the farmers' market and how important it is for the town to have easily accessible fresh produce.

Stall-owner Mark Topham praised the farmers' market for attracting a diverse range of customers.

He said that there is a “great mix of people” and added that having the market “right on the high street helps a great deal.”

Floweriest Ronnie Osmund added that the market is very popular and gets "very busy on Fridays and Saturdays".

Winchester resident Jenny Farthing said that the market is great for Winchester. She said: "The city needs fresh produce because supermarkets put everything in plastic, I don’t want to put everything in plastic, and I think that the quality is better."

She said that she loves to buy fruit, vegetables, cheese and olives.

Local Christopher Brooks praised the quality of food available and said the farmers' market is "very friendly and gets very busy".

Roger Walters told The Chronicle that he loves how the market "brings a lot of people in and that the variety of people is amazing".

University student Jack Charlton has also noticed the popularity of the stalls.

He said: "I always see fruit stores around and I like purchasing stuff myself".
