A PUB in Winchester has pledged to show all the games in the Women’s Super League - as research shows more people are watching women's sport than ever before.

New data found that more Brits than ever are supporting female sports following England Lionesses’ victory in the Euro’s 2022.

The research, which was commissioned by pub company and brewer Greene King, showed that 58 per cent of Britons now follow a women’s sports team.

It said that 30 per cent of Winchester residents are now more inclined to watch women’s sport in their local pub, citing the Lionesses’ success as the main reason for this, with other reasons including a better atmosphere (50 per cent) and that they enjoy watching with family and friends (43 per cent).

Twenty per cent of residents now watch women’s sports at their local pub more than once a month, with one in three saying this has increased over the last 12 months.

Pubs in Winchester are taking note of the demand for women’s sport, with 36 per cent of residents saying their local pubs are now showing more women’s sport than ever before. However, only 2 per cent believe their local pubs are showing enough.

Greene King has announced that it will continue to ensure women’s sports get the airtime it deserves, pledging to show all the games in the Women’s Super League for 2023 across its Winchester pubs, including the County Arms.

To raise awareness of women’s sports fixtures across its venues, the brewer is teaming up with footballer and Lioness Alex Greenwood.

She said: “It’s great to see that respect and support for women’s sport is improving, I believe there is still work to be done on this.

“Broadcasting more women’s sports matches in public places will help us sustain the momentum and continue this improvement. This is why I’m delighted to be partnering with Greene King once more to help raise awareness of their continued support for women’s sport.”

Greene King marketing director, Amanda Royston, called pubs “the original social network”.

She said: “We want our pubs to be safe and welcoming spaces for all people.

“It’s clear from our research that people believe pubs have an important role to play in improving awareness and support for women’s sport, which is why we’ve committed to showing all the games in the Women’s Super League for the 2023 season across many of our city-centre pubs.”
