Hampshire libraries are launching the ‘Festival of Climate Change’ to highlight the importance of tackling climate change.

The event will run during the February half-term and include activities and events suitable for the whole family. Exhibitions will run until Saturday, February 18.

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Education, Councillor Steve Forster, said: "We are delighted to host this important festival in our libraries. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our communities and the world. Not only does it cause physical and financial damage, it can also have a long-term impact on health and well-being.

“While the County Council is working hard with partners and communities to combat climate change, we cannot do this alone. Everyone has a role to play in creating a more sustainable future, and this festival is a great opportunity to learn, engage, and find out how to take action.

“As well as talks and exhibitions aimed at increasing awareness about the causes and effects of climate change, there are fun workshops that demonstrate how we can all do our bit, including clever yet simple ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Cllr Forster added: “Hampshire County Council is committed to addressing climate change and promoting sustainability. We have set ourselves the goal of being carbon neutral and resilient to a two-degree rise in temperature by 2050.

“While large organisations play a major role in reducing their environmental impact, individuals can also have a significant influence. Every positive action we take makes a difference. I encourage everyone to take an active part in making a positive impact on our environment.”

The festival will feature a diverse range of events, including craft workshops that focus on making, mending and repurposing clothes and gifts. A film installation on climate change made by adults with learning difficulties. A talk from an author about environmental issues as well as climate-themed activities for children.

The Festival of Climate Change will be operating a 'pay what you decide' scheme. People taking part may, without obligation, contribute what they can, to support the activities that could help to create healthy and creative communities in Hampshire. Participants can choose to make an online payment after they have booked one of the events or they can bring a donation on the day.
