HAMPSHIRE County Council has released a video on its plans for a £1.4m scheme to replace a more than 100-year-old bridge in Winchester.

Works are set to take place on Tunbridge, in Garnier Road, for nine months from March after deterioration was found beneath the bridge.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Garnier Road will be closed to vehicles throughout the plan but businesses, properties and car parks will remain accessible.

In the video, the executive lead member for services, Cllr Nick Adams-King, speaks to chief engineer Brian Hill to see what needs to change and why.

The project is being carried out in phases to ensure pedestrians and cyclists can still get through and access the nearby paths and walks like St Catherine’s Hill.

The new bridge will be in line with European standards. Cllr Adams-King asked the chief engineer: “Will it look the same?”

To which, Mr Hill replied: “It will look very similar. We’ve been talking to Winchester City Council about the look of it. We’re actually going to go for brickwork parapets with stone coatings along the top, which will tie up better with the other bridges that are along here.

“Underneath it will have eight new concrete beams which will support the new roadway and they will be lifted in with a big mobile crane.”
