A GROUP of women used their monthly meeting to brush up on their art skills.

For the Somborne Sisterhood’s February meeting, 20 members and guests were given an insight to the painter Sarah Seymour.

Known to many as an organist and singing teacher, Seymour recently moved to King’s Somborne and specialises in landscape paintings.

The woman’s institute group of King’s Somborne was pleased to welcome the local artist to the village hall and get creative themselves.

Committee member Rebecca Rickard said: “Sarah talked to us candidly about her life and how circumstances and luck, both good and bad, as well sheer hard work and determination, have brought her to where she is today.

“A highlight was in 2016 when, in order to improve her painting of portraits, she painted 50 people, including family and famous individuals.

“Sarah then took us through three activities. The first was about focusing on the detail, by drawing a pen or pencil and then imagining in the form of an unusual object, such as a carrot; this inspired our creativity.

“Next, we learnt about colour palettes by creating a Valentine's card like no other. Finally, Sarah introduced us to Chinese brush strokes resulting in some beautiful paintings of orchids.

“An evening of fun and mindful art where the fear dissipated as the evening progressed. Thanks again to Sarah.”

The next meeting of the Somborne Sisterhood will take place on March 3 at the Working Men’s Club, where the group will be playing skittles.  For more information email sombornesisterhood@gmail.com or follow @sombonesisterhood on Instagram.
