DISGRACED rock star Gary Glitter, who is reported to be staying at a Hampshire hostel, has many past connections to the county.

The 78-year-old left HMP The Verne at Portland, Dorset, on Friday after eight years behind bars for what have been described as "depraved" offences against three girls.

Glitter - real name Paul Francis Gadd - has links to Warsash and other parts of Hampshire.

He was jailed in 2015 after being convicted of having sex with a girl under the age of 13, attempting to rape an eight-year-old and repeatedly molesting a 12-year-old.

Glitter was automatically freed midway through his sentence despite the original trial judge saying he had done nothing to atone for his crimes.

He is said to be staying at a hostel in Hampshire following his release. Police were called to the building on Saturday amid reports an angry crowd had gathered outside.

Hampshire Constabulary have not confirmed that Glitter is at the hostel in question.

A spokesperson would only say: "Police were called at 3.32pm to reports of a public order incident.

"Officers attended the scene and the situation was resolved. No arrests were made."

Glitter, who is subject to strict licence and monitoring conditions following his release, is reported to have been placed in the gated hostel for his own protection.

The former glam rock singer lived on a 40ft boat at Haslar Marina, Gosport, for a short period in 1997.

Two years later he was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to possessing 4,000 pornographic pictures of children.

In 2002 he was expelled from Cambodia amid reports of sex crime allegations, and in 2006 he was jailed for sexually abusing two young girls in Vietnam.

In 2008 Glitter was photographed outside a car showroom in Warsash and at a local supermarket. Accompanied by a friend he was spotted wearing a ginger wig, straw hat and jeans.

Speaking at the time, Peter Nash Specialist Cars manager Mark Nash confirmed Glitter had been seen admiring a £25,995 Mercedes ML four-wheel-drive.

Glitter's 16-year prison sentence was handed down at Southwark Crown Court in February 2015.
