TESCO has announced plans to cut its remaining in-store counter services, including bakeries and fishmongers.

The planned restructuring will also see changes to store management roles and some head office functions.

Tesco and retail trade union Usdaw were both unable to tell the Chronicle if the Tesco Extra located at Winnall roundabout would be affected by the changes.

The in-store managerial restructure proposes the removal of 1,750 lead and team managers, alongside the introduction of more than 1,800 shift leader roles.

Within its head office, Tesco is proposing to make changes to several functions as well as removing duplicated roles, which, according to Usdaw, could lead to around 120 jobs being placed at risk.

Tesco’s plans will also see some localised changes across its business, including pharmacy closures, post office restructures and removal of night shifts – all of which could lead to redundancies.

The removal of in-store counter services follows on from the closure of the majority of Tesco’s counter services starting in 2019.

Usdaw is planning on entering talks with Tesco in an effort to protect jobs during the restructuring.

Usdaw national officer Danial Adams said: “Tesco has informed us that they are looking to undertake restructures across the business. Clearly there is no good time to receive news like this, but it is especially difficult in the midst of a cost of living crisis and will be devastating to those who may be affected.

“Usdaw will be entering into collective consultation with Tesco immediately to interrogate these proposals. We will be doing all we can to support members throughout the process with a view to protecting jobs and, where this is not possible, securing the best possible deal for those affected.”

Our priority is to support those colleagues impacted and help find alternative roles within our business from the vacancies and newly created roles we have available.”
