A FLOOD alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for groundwater flooding in the Meon Valley.

The alert was updated on Thursday, January 19 at 1.13pm, and runs from East Meon to Soberton.

A message on the agency website said: “In the Meon Valley, groundwater levels are high and continue to rise.

“In January 2023, almost double the monthly average rainfall has been recorded at Warnford in just two weeks. Since Wednesday, January 11, groundwater levels have risen by 1.1m.

“Currently, the Winterbourne is flowing across Rectory Lane and behind the Bucks Head Pub. In Rectory Lane, there will be water ponded around the electricity sub-station. Dry weather is forecast until Friday, January 20.

“Levels are expected to rise until Wednesday, January 18 where they should begin to stabilise. From Tuesday, January 17, it is possible that onset of flooding may occur at the Bucks Head Pub.

“Further unsettled weather is forecast in late January and into February. Levels are likely to remain high or could rise even further in the coming weeks.

“We continue to monitor the forecast. If you use pumps to help protect property, please ensure that they can operate.”

Further flood alerts have been issued for Kings Sombourne and Little Sombourne, Bramdean and Cheriton, and Twyford and Hensting.

The Environment Agency website states: "Flooding is possible in this area. Monitor local groundwater levels and weather conditions. Take care in areas prone to flooding.

"Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. Check pumps and any other flood protection equipment you may have.

"The Environment Agency Flood Warning System has issued this message based on rising groundwater levels."
