THE present land-slip on the railway at Hook, causing major disruption on services to London from Winchester, reminds me of a similar incident at that location some years ago.
Trains were diverted from Winchester via Alresford and Alton. Unfortunately, the authorities allowed this line to close in 1973. If it had been electrified in 1967 as the present main line was, then expensive rail replacement bus services to Basingstoke when engineering work takes place or incidents occur could have been avoided.
Yet another example of Dr. Beeching’s rash decisions.
