AN INTERNATIONAL exhibition showcased metals and jewellery when it appeared in Winchester

Winchester Gallery held an exhibition called What Colour is Metal? - curated by Sara Roberts and Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill from the Winchester School of Art - in December.

It featured metals and jewellery in innovative ways, including contributions from artists from places as far as Japan.

Sara, who is the programme leader of MA Contemporary Curating at the University of Southampton, said: “Some research exhibitions can look quite dull, this certainly wasn’t dull.

"It was a visual feast with some surprising colours that were sparkly and bright.

"It was quite unusual. It moves and it is super light, there was even a video at the exhibition of it being worn by a dancer to show how it would sit on the body.

“We’ve been working on this project for eight years, researching it. There were a lot of stories within the exhibition, about how one person has taught another."

The exhibition was based on research made by Michael Rowe, a leading figure in the works of metal as art.

Art from 25 artists’ pieces, including John Moore, was on display.

The exhibition was originally shown in Dublin Castle, attracting 50,000 visitors. The Winchester exhibition was its only UK appearance.
