An inmate has admitted to conspiring to smuggle mobile phones and steroids into Winchester Prison.

Liam Currell, 31, currently at HMP Guys Marsh, previously denied plotting to bring list A and B articles into the city's jail between May 1 and August 31 last year.

Currell hadn't had time to speak to his counsel before the last hearing, the court heard.

However, appearing in the dock at Winchester Crown Court wearing a skin-tight Nike top on Wednesday, November 23, Currell pleaded guilty to both offences.

Two other defendants were charged as part of the conspiracy, although they weren't required in court.

Christopher Harman, 36, of Pentons Close, Holybourne, near Alton, and Stephanie Burt, 30, of Stanley Green Road, Poole, both denied trying to smuggle steroids during a hearing on October 26.

Harman also pleaded not guilty to conspiring to bring mobile phones into the facility - a charge Burt admitted.

She is also accused of failing to comply with a Section 49 notice of the Regulation Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) after allegedly failing to give the police the PIN for her mobile phone, which she denies.

A trial date of January 30, 2023, at Salisbury Crown Court has been set.

Judge Adam Feest KC told Currell he won't be sentenced until after the trial concludes. He was remanded in custody.
