PUBLIC consultation has opened on proposals for a new solar farm at a former tip near Wickham.

The plan is for landform modifications for the construction of a solar farm and gas management system at the former Funtley Refuse Tip in Titchfield Lane.

The consultation is open until November 30, with previous concerns including an increase in traffic congestion, air pollution, noise pollution, negative impacts on the area and lack of community benefits.

On the planning statement, it said: “It has been estimated that a total of 1,155,470 tonnes of material will be required to reprofile the land at the site in order for it to be ready for the solar farm to be constructed.

“Existing renewable energy policy and guidance is a material consideration in the determination of this application. In recent years, the government has increased its commitment to reducing the level of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the use of renewable energy are expected to play an important role in achieving government targets.

“The Funtley Solar Farm will increase the supply of renewable energy in Hampshire and contribute towards Hampshire County Council’s aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“There is no indication of any locally alternative sites being available for this type of proposal in terms of ecology and habitat and this is an old landfill site.

“In conclusion, the proposed development would provide for a 10.5 MW solar farm and contribute towards achieving the UK’s climate change and renewable energy obligations.

“If planning permission is granted, the applicant and the development team will set up a Local Liaison Planning Committee to ensure the local people are kept well informed on the progress of the development throughout the construction phase.”

Comments for the public consultation can be sent by post to Strategic Planning, Economy, Transport & Environment Department, Elizabeth II Court West, The Castle, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8UD, or via email at planning@hants.gov.uk by November 30.
