FIRE crews rushed to a blaze in Winchester, performing immediate emergency care on two casualties.

Firefighters were called to the fire in Rowlings Road, near Weeke Community Centre, at 7.47pm on Tuesday, November 9.

Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the blaze caused by a candle within a third floor flat using hose reels and jets before the property was ventilated.

Immediate emergency care was performed on two casualties who were then cared for by South Central Ambulance Service paramedics.

Crews from Winchester, Sutton Scotney, Eastleigh and Redbridge were on the scene along with the aerial ladder from St Mary’s.

After damping down, the emergency workers checked adjoining properties for potential fire spread and then conducted a number of community fire safety visits.

Police were called at 7.53pm by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "Officers attended to assist with road closures while the fire service dealt with the fire. This is not being treated as arson."
