WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL has confirmed that the ice rink is not returning to the Christmas Market for the second year in a row.

Its Christmas Market replaced its popular ice rink with a performance stage last year.

The reason given was that it would make social distancing easier, along with increased space between the chalets.

However, this year the cathedral has confirmed that they have decided to stay with the performance stage.

A cathedral spokesman did not mention the ice rink in a statement and said: "Winchester Cathedral are thrilled to welcome people back to the popular Christmas Market at the heart of the city. After a really challenging few years, the market is a great way of coming together and celebrating all things festive and joyful.

“There will be mulled wine, mince pies and lots of independent traders offering handmade gifts. As last year, there will also be a community stage for local musicians and choirs to perform everyone’s favourite Christmas carols.”

The ice rink last featured at the market in 2019, before the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

Hampshire Chronicle:

Last year, a spokesman said: “While the stage allows for increased space for social distancing, the Cathedral is delighted to be offering a variety of exciting, free performances throughout the duration of the Christmas Market.

“Throughout the day, across all weekends, local acts from Hampshire, including choir groups, community bands, school choirs, city buskers, jazz groups and more, will come together to perform on the stage to entertain this year's festive visitors.”

The stage will be coming back along with the lantern parade which will form part of the market's opening ceremony.

Around 118 German-inspired chalets will line the ancient cathedral walls, with pop-ups selling a range of seasonal gifts, food, and drink.

Founded in 2006, the Christmas Market celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2016. The city's festive celebrations attract thousands of people each year from far and wide.

In Southampton, organisers have confirmed that its Christmas market in the city centre is not returning. However, the ice rink is returning to the Westquay shopping centre.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market is being held from November 18 to December 22.
