CIVIC chiefs have paid a silent tribute following the death of Sue Glasspool, a former Mayor and honorary alderman of Hampshire

Mrs Glasspool, formerly of Main Road, Itchen Abbas, died on September 17, the full Council heard.

City councillors and  officers stood for a moment of reflection at the full Council meeting on Wednesday October 4.

The current Mayor, Cllr Derek Green, said Mrs Glasspool represented the Itchen Valley ward as a Conservative from 1983 to 1999 and served as mayor in 1993-94. She was also a county councillor and was made an honorary alderman by the county council in 2010.

He said Mrs Glasspool, a mother of three, grandmother of nine and great grandmother of three, had recently moved to Glasgow to be closer to one of her children.

The funeral will be at Itchen Abbas church on Friday October 21 at 12.30pm.

Mrs Glasspool was thrust into the national spotlight when she was the first sitting local councillor to call for the resignation of Winchester MP John Browne in 1989 when he was embroiled in a parliamentary scandal. The controversy over Mr Browne tore apart the local Conservative Party for several years.

She was married to the late Jim Glasspool, a highly successful businessman and senior member of the Test and Itchen Association.
