A NATIONAL initiative is inviting people to take command of the environment’s future alongside Winchester Green Week.

September 24 to October 2 marks Winchester Green Week 2022, an annual festival that aims to promote a more sustainable future.

The city’s environment focussed event forms part of the Great Big Green Week, a UK wide environmental action celebration. An initiative titled ‘letters to tomorrow’ is encouraging people to write to someone in the future to drive political action on climate change as part of this year's festival.

All the letters will be published on the letters to tomorrow website at letterstotomorrow.com/ in hope of emphasising that change is needed to the country’s politicians.

The executive director of Winchester Action on Climate Change, Jo Crocker, said: “Letters to tomorrow is a way everybody can be involved in calling for climate action. Everyone is invited to write a letter to a loved one in the future to call for political action on climate change now - because the future isn't written yet.

“Heat waves this summer right here in Winchester and floods in Pakistan show us the climate crisis is affecting our lives already. It's only going to get worse for the next generation unless we take action now to get it under control. This is urgent! Our leaders have the power to take action now to protect the future for our children. We want leaders to take notice of our hopes and fears- letters are being sent to leaders every day this week, so they take notice and put climate change and nature on their to do lists.”
