IT is probably the quirkiest property in Stockbridge and it certainly has a colourful history.

Now, Stockbridge House, which most recently was used as a garage, is for sale.

The Grade II listed building, on the north side of High Street, dates back to the late 19th century and according to estate agent, BCM, the listed building register states that it was formerly a place of "ill repute" and that Lillie Langtry, mistress of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, once stayed there.

Stockbridge historian, Dr Hugh Saxton, said those staying in the property in Victorian times would use the balcony to watch members of the nobility - including the Prince of Wales - pass through the town on their way to Danebury races.

He added that it was a well-established rumour that the balcony was also frequented by women of the night to advertise their services.

Dr Saxton said: "It was said to have been built on the basis that people had seen something or other of similar looks overseas.

"It will be interesting to see what people will do with it. I don't know what it's like as a dwelling, but it's certainly a good retail outlet."

The property is for sale for only the second time in 80 years. As well as being a family home, the site also includes Parker's Garage.

The pumps poured their last petrol in 2005, although the shop carried on selling hardware goods until last year.

BCM said the house was in need of modernisation, but boasted six bedrooms, four reception rooms, a kitchen, utility room and two large garages.

At the back there is a large garden and a paddock - the property extends to more than an acre overall.

The grounds also include three stores and workshops. The garden is enclosed on two sides by Parker's Stream, a tributary of the River Test, complete with single-bank fishing rights.

BCM said interest was already high and that the house and garage lent itself to a number of potential uses.

Alastair Wilson, of BCM, said: "Any property of this size and style in Stockbridge High Street will always create substantial interest.

"Add to this property's local renown and colourful history and that interest can only be fanned further."

Open viewing days will be held on Friday and Saturday April, 4 and 5, between 11am and 4pm.

A viewing can also be arranged by calling BCM on 01962 763900.

The auction will take place at The Grosvenor Hotel in Stockbridge at 11am on Wednesday, May 21.
