BOSSES at Perins School, Alresford, have refused to comment on reports that they are contemplating mov ing it to a new site.

However, many people believe they are in favour of the idea of transferring to a site on the eastern outskirts of the town.

Simon Cook, city council lor for Alresford and a gover nor at the school, said: "Perins see it as a splendid opportunity to put up a per fect school.

"I take the view that it's an idea worth investigating because Perins see their school on a campus which is very cramped. It's a very interesting proposal and it's worth some research to see if it's a feasible proposition.

"But we don't know how committed the Government would be to paying for it. In theory, it looks good but, in practice, I don't know."

Land east of Sun Lane was one of two areas in Alresford that the community was asked to consider for devel opment by the city council.

In its official response to city planning chiefs, the town said it was against housing being put on the site but that it would support plans to relocate Perins there.

This is because, as with the current Perins site, only a quarter of the land would be buildings, the rest being open recreation areas.

The town then envisages putting around 150 homes on the current Perins site; half the number of homes the city council want to put in Alresford over the next two decades.

In its response to city planners, New Alresford Town Council, in conjunc tion with other key bodies in the town, said putting the school in Sun Lane would act as a barrier to further housing on the site's eastern fringes.

Landowner, Roger Pear son, said he had spoken to the county council about moving the school to Sun Lane four or five years ago but that nothing had come of it.

He added: "The site is one of the development options for the town and if a school was included in that, I could not see a problem.

"But I would have thought Perins would have spent too much money on improve ments down there to even contemplate it."
