AN art society, in Romsey, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a lecture about Hungarian culture.

The Arts Society Romsey is a leading arts education charity with a global network of local societies which bring people together through a shared curiosity for the arts.

As well as lectures, the group offers visits to galleries, museums and other places of artistic and cultural interest, and its members get involved in conservation activities around the town. 

They offer sponsorship and encouragement of the arts for young people in conjunction with local schools.

Titled, “A Hungarian Metropolis: Art and Culture in Budapest”,  the lecture will explore the cultural development of  Budapest from 1873 through the perspectives of architecture, art and music.

The talk will explore how the Hungarians came to understand national identity through cultural means.

The lecture takes place on September 6 at 11am at the Crosfield Hall, Romsey and lasts for approximately one hour. Refreshments will be available from 10.15am.

The lecturer, Gavin Plumley, lectures widely about the culture of Central Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. Recent talks include the Royal Opera House, the National Gallery, the National Trust, the National Theatre, the British Museum, the V&A, the Southbank Centre, the Tate and the Neue Galerie, New York, as well as for history of art societies and The Art Fund.

The lectures are open to anyone who wishes to attend as a guest on payment of £7 per lecture.
