I AM very pleased to see that the Hampshire Chronicle has brought readers’ attention to Dwight Eisenhower’s speech at Cheesefoot Head before D-Day, a significant event in the history, heritage and culture of Hampshire.

Eisenhower’s leadership to the invasion of mainland Europe was instrumental in the defeat of the Nazis, and in the peace we have had in Western Europe since then. Something, as a 76 year old, I am extremely grateful for.

Whilst the South Downs National Park has erected an information board at Cheesefoot Head which gives attention to Eisenhower's speech, more is surely needed. There, or near-by, a lasting memorial and knowledge facility featuring the speech, and Eisenhower’s life and achievements would be a way of doing this. Secure long term finance would be needed from both public and private sources. Perhaps, a scaled down replica of Frank Gehry’s Eisenhower memorial in Washington, DC could play a part in this.

I don’t agree that Eisenhower's speech was ‘infamous’. ‘Famous’ is the right description.
