CIVIC chiefs and rail companies are asking the public their views on potentially the biggest redevelopment in Winchester in decades.

Winchester City Council, along with Network Rail, and London & Continental Railways (LCR), are exploring opportunities in the Station Approach area and whether a viable, community-driven 'vision' can be developed on their respective land.

A consultation has been launched and local people and businesses are being encouraged to share their views.

As reported in the Chronicle, the area for redevelopment could stretch from Gladstone Street to Andover Road, including the Cattle Market car park. A previous scheme was derailed by legal action.

The council believes regeneration with a sustainable mixed-use development has potential to contribute to a vibrant, green economy that revitalises the urban environment with the aim to create welcoming space for those that live locally, travel from the station or visit our city.

Cllr Martin Tod, city council leader, said: “This is a great opportunity. It will help us strengthen green travel and connect the station, city and the wider area better. It can support future ways of working and living in our city. And it can do so in a way that respects the city and all the things that are special about it.”

Local residents and businesses are invited to share their thoughts and a website has been launched – www.winchesterstationapproach.co.uk – which features an interactive map for comments as well an online survey.

A newsletter is being sent to more than 5,000 homes near to Station Approach to set out details of how to contribute ideas and all information is now available on the council’s website.

Two consultation events are also planned in the Autumn. The first is on Thursday September 15 from 2-7pm, outside the main entrance to the station, and the second on Saturday September 24 from 10-2pm in a market stall on the High Street.

The consultation will run for twelve weeks, concluding on Friday October 21.
