A MAN from Winchester who was dedicated to his family died after a series of falls, an inquest heard.

Basil John Pett, of Park Road, died in the Brendoncare nursing home on November 30.

The inquest, held at Winchester Coroner's Court on August 4, heard that Mr Pett, 94, had trained to be an actor and had made TV documentaries throughout his career.

Also that he had taught film and TV at the University of Winchester until the age of 85 and was dedicated to his career and family.

The inquest heard that, in recent years, Mr Pett's mobility had been worsening which made it more difficult for his wife, Victoria Pett, to care for him.

In May last year, Mr Pett had a fall at home which resulted in him being admitted to Southampton General Hospital. After this, he was admitted for rehabilitation at Forest Court, in Calmore.

Here, he had subsequent falls, including one in September, the day before he was due to be discharged to Brendoncare nursing home.

Christopher Babbidge, Forest Court manager, provided a statement to the inquest. Mr Babbidge said: “Forest Court provides short term support to people from hospital.

“Staff provided support to keep Mr Pett as safe as possible.”

Mr Pett's family questioned why he had fallen, given the call button and sensor map measures which were in place.

Mr Babbidge said: “Staff were checking on him regularly. He was unsettled at night, but he didn't need constant supervision.”

Area coroner Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp ruled accidental death.
