ABOUT 7,000 people enjoyed music, dancing and merriment in the glorious sun as Wickham Festival returned over four days.

The festival, which started on Thursday, August 4 and wrapped up on Sunday, August 7, attracted large crowds who were keen to see live acts such as 10cc, the Saw Doctors, the Levellers and the Waterboys.

The annual event, which takes place in fields off Blind Lane, sold thousands of day tickets, as well as hosting campers in tents and campervans.

There were family-friendly activities, such as story times, inflatables and a kids' disco, as well as music on two main stages.

There was also a smaller acoustic stage, a comedy tent, scores of traders, plenty of food and drink sellers, dancing acts plus more.

Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: "It has been a fantastic festival. I think it has been our best ever and everyone I have spoken to has said the same thing which is very pleasing.

"Of course, the glorious weather helped enormously but we had a wonderful line-up with some really top-class artists and all the feedback has been incredibly positive.

"It was just so good to see so many happy, smiling faces again especially after the last couple of years which have been so difficult for everyone. This has really given people a lift. Everyone had so much fun and that is exactly why we do it.

"Now the hard work starts to plan for next year to do it all again and to try and top this event - though it will be tough!"

Peter said that tickets have already been selling fast for next year.

He added: "You can tell how successful this event has been by the huge number of people who have already booked for next year. They don't know the artists yet but they know they will be top quality and our unique family atmosphere will remain the same."

Early Bird tickets are now available at wickhamfestival.co.uk and fans can save up to £100 on a weekend season ticket if they book before August 31.
