HEAVY delays are affecting drivers in the Winchester area with a crash on the M3 north of Winchester and emergency roadworks south of the city. The southbound M3 - is closed between Junction 8 at Popham and Junction 9 at Winnall after a lorry overturned. Southbound traffic is being diverted to Bullington Cross on the A303 and then south to Junction 9. But traffic is backing up and traffic bosses are warning of heavy delays.

The roads information service Inrix said: "M3 southbound closed due to accident, a van and an overturned lorry involved from J8 A303 to J9 A34 (Winnall roundabout/Winchester North). Closed since 5am. Diversion - solid triangle diversion symbol, via the A303 and A34 through Sutton Scotney and Winchester."

Hampshire Chronicle:

The police in a statement: "We were called at around 4.20am to reports of a minor injury collision involving a lorry and a van. The lorry is overturned and Highways are currently on scene to recover the vehicle. Drivers are advised to follow diversions put in place by Highways South East and follow their updates."

The M3 has now partially reopened.

Meanwhile, there are delays south of Winchester. Drivers on the M3 should expect delays as two lanes have been closed between Chandler's Ford and Winchester. The works are being carried out between junctions 11 and 12. The delays of about 45-minutes affect the northbound traffic. This is due to emergency repairs being carried out.
