A LONG-empty restaurant in Winchester is set to have a new tenant after being empty for two years.

Turkish restaurant chain Turquaz will to open on Jewry Street in the premises vacated by Loch Fyne in 2020.

The historic Tudor building will become the 15th site for the restaurant chain across London and the south-east, with an opening date set for early September.

Savills, on behalf of a private landlord, has recently completed the letting. A new 15-year lease has been agreed on the city centre Grade II listed property which comprises 4,526 sq ft (420 sq m) across ground and first floor trading areas. In total the restaurant and trading areas can accommodate around 150 covers. There is also a central courtyard with outdoor seating for approximately 26.

Turquaz offers a variety of Turkish cuisine, a large selection of charcoal grilled fish and meats with a plethora of exciting vegetarian dishes and classics such as moussaka and halloumi salad.

The property is next to Brasserie Blanc, opposite Wagamama and near Josie’s and Cabinet Rooms.

Cevdet Mutlu, the owner of Turquaz, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be opening one of our restaurants in the wonderful city of Winchester and in such a historic building.”

Chris Bickle, director in the licensed leisure team at Savills Southampton, said: “We are extremely pleased to secure a new operator to bring this beautiful historic property back life. Turquaz’s Mediterranean cuisine is highly complementary to the current offers across the city, with Giggling Squid also securing space in the city recently.

“Winchester is regularly voted one of the best places to live in the UK and is a very popular food and beverage location with low city centre commercial vacancy rates of around 8.5 per cent compared to the UK average of 14.5 per cent in March 2022.”

Turquaz was represented by Mark Hiller at DMR Property.
