MORE plans have been put forward for a long-empty Winchester city centre store.

Tas Foods Ltd, which operates German Doner Kebab, is seeking permission for signage outside part of the former Next shop on the High Street.

It wants approval from the city council for an externally illuminated fascia and a projecting sign.

German Doner Kebab had declined to confirm its intentions but the application clearly shows their involvement.

Haris Kasuji, of consultants RR Planning, in the application to the council, said: "The proposed adverts in this application feature a simple externally illuminated letter sign which will be centrally positioned with a colour match trough light above and soft nano upplight below.

"The level of illumination will not exceed 300 cd/m2. There will also be a simple logo projecting sign placed to the right on the fascia band. This will also be externally illuminated. The precedent for modern commercial development is well established here and there are all manner of signs in the immediate vicinity.

"Advertisement applications can only be determined on the basis of highway safety and amenity. The subject proposal does not harm local amenity or highway safety."

German Doner Kebab is set to open in one unit with the other half of the former Next unit earmarked for gym chain F45 Training.

The space has been empty since Next pulled out in 2017. The first potential development was by Loungers, which runs the Cosy Club and Loungers chains. It got permission for a conversion in August 2020 but their plans were derailed by the pandemic.

Builders moved into the unit, under the Travelodge, to split it into two in April.

Before Next operated from the premises it was a Gateway supermarket and previously, Somerfield.
