SAINTS goalkeeper Willy Caballero admitted teammate Gavin Bazunu has “a lot of things that at his age is difficult to have” in praise of the youngster.

Former Argentine international Caballero has signed a new contract to remain at St Mary’s for a further year, after initially extending his emergency stay last campaign to this summer.

The 40-year-old will act as a mentor to the likes of new signing Bazunu, who penned a five-year contract at Saints following his transfer from Manchester City last month.

Bazunu, just 20-years-old, is set to push Alex McCarthy for the number one shirt ahead of and during the upcoming 2022-23 season.

And asked about the new addition to the goalkeeping group, coached by Andrew Sparkes and including Caballero, McCarthy, Bazunu and Polish stopper Mateusz Lis, the veteran relayed messages he had heard from others.

“Well we recently trained yesterday and I received a few comments from Man City, his and my former team,” Caballero said, having played at the Etihad between 2014-17.

“He has a lot of potential and is one for the future but I know every goalkeeper has to impress and grow season per season. Hopefully he can achieve what others are speaking about him.

“He has very good physical condition, we can see that he has a lot of things that a goalkeeper of his age is difficult to have. Hopefully he will be great for the team.”

As well as offering experience to the goalkeepers, Caballero and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will hope he can be an oracle of wisdom to everybody across what will be a young group.

“Because of my age, I support the boys in goal and the decisions of the manager. Hopefully I can help not just the goalkeeper but any player that needs a bit of support in the week,” he added.
