A MUSEUM has unveiled a brand-new exhibition that explores Southampton's rich history of women's football.

At SeaCity Museum's new exhibit, On the Ball: Women Trailblazers, stories will be conveyed via pictures, awards, and oral histories.

Former Southampton players, who travelled the world and dominated the game, have been collaborating with museum curators to share their tales of struggles and accomplishments, which you can hear in the exhibition.

This exhibition is in celebration of Southampton's role as the host city for the UEFA Women's EURO 2022.

Football fans will have a chance to explore items that have been donated by none other than the city's female players.

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: "Southampton has such a great connection to the history of women’s football, and we’re extremely proud of our ex-players who have been helping pull this display together.

"Teamed with welcoming the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 tournament to Southampton this year, we really want to give them the recognition and platform they deserve."

Visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the origins of the city’s First World War factory teams in 1917, as well as why the FA forbade women from playing.

A seminar is also organised on Friday, July 8 at the Southampton City Art Gallery where fans can learn more about these pioneering women.

It will be led by football historian Jean Williams as she interviews some of the ex-Southampton Women’s FC and England players from the 1970s and 1980s.

At the special one-off event, visitors can hear their astonishing stories of muddy pitches, international travel, lack of equipment, and sexism, but above all, their desire and passion for the beautiful game.

This showcase is supported by Arts Council England and will run from Saturday, June 25 until Wednesday, October 12.

Southampton will be hosting three group stage games of the UEFA Women’s EURO at St Mary’s Stadium on July 7 (Norway vs Northern Ireland), July 11 (Austria vs Northern Ireland) and July 15 (England vs Northern Ireland).
