RESIDENTS have expressed their shock and worry following a flat fire in Basingstoke last week.

The incident happened on Friday, June 24, police were called to a flat fire on Blue Hut Way at around 12.30pm.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire. Since the incident Hampshire Police are appealing for information.

Detective Constable Amy Ryan, said: “At this time we are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and how the fire came to set alight in the flat.

"I would like to speak to anyone who was in the Blue Hut Way area of Basingstoke at around 12.30pm on Friday. Did you see anyone acting suspiciously in the area, or hear anything that could be connected? Do you have any information that could help our inquiry?

“I would urge anyone with information to get in touch with us as soon as possible quoting 44220252075.”

Residents who live nearby told the Gazette “police cars” and a “commotion” could be heard.

One, who did not want to be named, said: “On Friday afternoon there was lots of activity and a bit of a commotion.

“We heard fire engines and a police car but to be honest we did not realise there was a fire until we looked out the window and saw the flat behind us with a charred window, it looks like a bad fire.”

Another resident described the incident as a “proper shock”.

They said: “I wasn’t in at that time but my flatmate who was working from home was and he was messaging me about it.

“He could see it from the window and I am just intrigued to know what happened. My first thought was 'I hope it does not spread'.”

Another, who also did not wish to be named, shared their concern about the incident happening within a block of flats.

They added: “It is quite shocking and a worry to see a fire happen in a block of flights which is quite dangerous because it could have spread more.

“I think it is quite shocking for it to happen in a new-build estate. I am not sure what happened but I just hope the occupants are okay.”
